DEPARTURE DAY:
Excursion information
Visit the most western and southern of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean. We will leave from the south of Tenerife on the morning boat to Puerto de la Estaca.
We will start our day visiting the Mirador de Isora , which offers an impressive perspective of the Las Playas depression, with its imposing cliffs and its perfect arch shape. It is the product of a gravitational slide that has formed an interior bay on the slopes that ends in a pleasant beach, in front of which is the Roque de la Bonanza.
We will continue our route to the Mirador del Jinama , with views over the Valle del Golfo at the point where the Jinama royal path begins, the main pedestrian access route to the valley. The view allows us to see the contrast between the plateau, behind us, and the Laurisilva escarpment. A luxe for the senses!
We will enter the Frontera Rural Park , the largest natural space on the island. This brings together the most unique landscapes and where we will admire the Laurisilva ecosystem, a place that seems to be enchanted by its characteristic wet juniper. We will visit the Iglesia de la Candelaria , a temple with three naves built in 1818 where the most striking feature of the temple is its bell tower, placed on top of the Joapira mountain.
We cannot leave without visiting one of the most peculiar bathing areas on the island, the natural pools of La Maceta , and the famous Hotel Punta Grande. Located very close to the Integral Reserve of the Roques de Salmor. In one of its cliffs a small jetty was built from where some inhabitants left for towns in Europe seeking progress. At present, on this pier we find the Hotel Punta Grande, which dates back to 1884. The Hotel Punta Grande , is cited in the Guiness book as the smallest hotel in the world!
From the Mirador de la Peña , designed by the famous Canarian architect Cesar Manrique, we will see the El Golfo valley and the Fuga de la Gorreta, a cliff raised a thousand meters above the sea and through the shepherds were moving freely on the slopes.
From the viewpoint you can also see the Roques del Salmor that look like beads detached from a necklace that is submerged in the sea. They are a geological testimony to the dismantling of the island and a natural treasure as a refuge for seabirds and the giant lizard of El Hierro.
One of the obligatory visits, when we arrive at the town of Valverde, is to the Fábrica de Quesadillas , a typical local product with deep-rooted fame among its many consumers. Its artisan preparation is made with cheese, eggs, flour, sugar, grain anise, cinnamon and lemon (in addition to the house secret).
This daily work that the daughters of Adrián Gutiérrez, always next to the wood oven, has made the Herreña quesadilla so popular, becoming one of the must-have purchases to take home from the island.
Returning to the port, we will pass by the curious sculpture by the artist Rubén Armiche from El Hierro that represents the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes, made from recycled materials, and it is that under that white layer, there is all kinds of urban waste , including appliances, car parts, old wood….

Tips
Take advantage of your stay in Tenerife to visit the westernmost island in just one day! El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands. Of the seven, it is the one that is further west and shares the same climate as the rest. A paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
